Rainbow Six Siege is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
Ubisoft are behind Rainbow Six Siege, unlike anything else they have done, the community loves them for it, but at the Six Invitational, it was announced that they would no longer be offering up two new operators per release, instead choosing to do one.
When someone asked why, Roy Del Valle, the game's product manager, answered in a very interesting statement, he said:
"When we look at the amount of stuff that the team can work on today there's no doubt that this is the right choice to go into the future with full confidence for Rainbow Six Siege, This is allowing us to do a lot of things. It's allowing us to have a core gameplay focused philosophy, to dive deeper into those aspects. It's allowing us to polish a little bit more our operators, the operators that we're going to be bringing into the roster of 50+ operators that we have today. And this is a bit of a soft announcement, but it's allowing us to work for next-gen, so we are on next-gen in the coming years."
Over at Windows Central, game director Leroy Athanassof made the following statement when asked about the games release date on the new platforms.
"Why I can't give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles," Athanassof stated. "What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it's up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch."
But he added something, that should make many players happy:
"That means if you play on the next PlayStation, you will be able to matchmake with the previous PlayStation." Ubisoft also remains in discussions to bring cross-play to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, although it comes with numerous policy hurdles to circumvent.
"Again, this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play — have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it's a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It's just a matter of time before it happens."
There is also talk of cross-progression between platforms, but the example was Xbox to PC, but one can hope that it means your save data from the PlayStation 4 release, will work on the PlayStation 5 version. In addition, Ubisoft have outlined years 5 and 6 for the game, which is crazy when Year 4 has yet to begin.
