Meet the PlayStation 5
At the end of the PlayStation 5 reveal event, we finally got a look at the box for the upcoming console and I use the word box, very loosely, as it looks unlike anything that has come before it.
When the console is released, though we don’t know the date yet, gamers will have the choice to buy it with a disc drive, or as a purely digital console, meaning no discs allowed. Outside of that, both consoles will be identical, at least there has been no word on if one will contain a larger hard drive or not, but seeing as all games will be required to be installed to the internal SSD, it would matter not anyway.
“With PlayStation 5, we are making a significant leap to deliver a truly new generation of transformative play experiences that will redefine expectations for what games can be,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of SIE. “Worlds will be richer and more beautiful, they’ll captivate your senses in ways you didn’t think possible, and you’ll be able to experience them much more seamlessly, with lightning fast loading. Today’s showcase is just a glimpse of what’s to come in the next generation, and we want to thank our community for taking this journey to PS5’s launch with us.”
The consoles, regardless of which one you get, are designed to be stood up, but don’t worry, you can also lay it down, in fact here is what it looks like when flat.
In addition to the main console itself, there was a few new pieces of hardware announced as well, including a new camera, headphones and more. First up is the new HD Camera, which as the name provides is a HD camera, likely designed to allow anyone who owns a PlayStation 5, the ability to stream directly from the console. It could be used with PlayStation VR, like the PS4 camera allows, but that is not yet known.
Next up is the Pulse 3D wireless headset, which seems to be an evolved design on the PlayStation Gold series, which has been doing incredibly well over the past few years. Given the 3D Audio push PlayStation are making with the console, seeing a headset designed to make the most of that, makes sense, and heck the name matches as well.
The most interesting piece of hardware though is the new Media Remote, which if I have to explain what a remote does, you are on the wrong site. What is interesting about it though, is that the PlayStation 4 never got an official one, sure there were a few licenced ones, but none made by Sony themselves.
Across the top of the remote you will find three buttons, and smack bang in the middle is a microphone button, which likely means you will be able to speak to your console, letting it do the heavy lifting. While the controller has an in-built microphone, there was no hints as to what it might be used for.
Finally, the last piece of tech, the charging dock, which as the name suggest, charges, specifically it will charge two DualSense controllers at once. Interestingly though, they appear to charge via the lower portion of the controller, instead of the USB-C port on top of it. In the trailer though, there is a close up of the mic port, showing some little plates, so i might be connecting there.
There is of course no pricing on any of this, nor any release date, but expect most, if not all, to release on the same day as the console.
