Top Games of E3 2021

Top Games of E3 2021

Every E3 has games that stand above the rest, for many reasons, some have a singular hook that makes players want to play them, others are visual masterpieces and some are just so new and out there, that the lack of understanding is what drives people to want to play them.

Whatever the case maybe, there are always big games at E3 and this years show, E3 2021 was no exception, there were gameplay debuts of highly anticipated titles, next entries in long running series and returns of series long thought dead. Here are the games that have us the most excited, now that we have seen more of them, or in their debut, know they now exist.

Forza Horizon 5

Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC - Nov 9

The Horizon series started out as off shoot of the main Forza Motorsport, but with Horizon 2 people started to pay more attention. Then came the one set in Australia and then the UK and by then, the series had obtained a devout following. Horizon 5 was a bit of a shocker, purely because we all expected the reboot of the Motorsport series, but as a Horizon fan, I will gladly take this one instead.

Metroid Dread

Switch - Oct 8

19 years, that is how long it has been since we first heard the words Metroid Dread and while there is no doubt that what is being presented in this new game, will be quite different to the original plan, it is more 2D Metroid and that alone is great. Given that this is the final chapter in this story arc for Samus, this could be a very bittersweet ending.

Elden Ring

Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 - Jan 22

When Elden Ring was first announced, many cheered with delight, FromSoftware and George R.R. Martin teaming up for a new adventure was a big deal. Since then the game had been radio silent, but this years E3 brought it back into the light in a big way and the simple fact that the game is out early next year, makes it even more impressive.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Switch* - Oct 26

There had been talk that Eidos Montreal were creating a new Guardians game, not long after the confirmation the Square Enix deal with Marvel. But given the lukewarm reception players gave the Avengers game, many were skeptical. But this is going to be a fully single player title, no DLC, no microtransactions, just a story filled with hits from the 80s.

*Switch version is cloud based, so it may not become available in Australia.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp

Switch - Dec 3

Nintendo not only did it with Metroid and then Warioware, but they announced a third series was being revived during their E3 Direct. Advance Wars was the first time that Intelligent System brought their war games, known as Famicom War on the NES, to the western audiences and they were a hit. The first two, originally on the GBA, are now being remade for Switch

Those are the games that impressed me the most, but what about you, what games have you excited from this years E3?
