The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is quite a way from being released
Ubisoft have a lot of games in development at all times, with Ubisoft Montreal being one of the busiest. But for all the staff they have there, it seems some games just take more time than others, case in point the Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake.
The game was first revealed at the debut of Ubisoft Forward and set to release in early 2021, however just days before its dated release, the game was delayed a few months for polish. Then in March of 2021 the game was delayed indefinitely and then more than a year went by without any update on the game.
In May 2022 word was released that the game, which had been in development at Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune, would now be handed back to the Montreal studio, which was where the original game was first made. In June 2022 word came out that the game would not release during the 2022-2023 fiscal year, which has now ended, so that must mean a release date is on the way, sadly no.
In an “interview” with Producer Jean-Francois Naud and Game Director Michael McIntyre, Ubisoft News asked a few questions about the state of the game and the words are not good.
At what stage is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake at now?
JFN: In terms of the development stage, we're in conception right now. Since we took over the project, we've been looking at feedback from the community and finding our own way of delivering the game. Now, we're building up the team, defining the priorities, putting prototypes together, testing elements, and looking at how we can include community feedback in the development as well. It’s still in an early stage, and players should not expect to hear more about the game this year, but rest assured that we’re all putting our strengths and heart into this project.
So a game that was days away from being released, is now back in the conception stage and with that bad news comes more, the game will not be at Ubisoft Forward in June. Though given its stage in development not showing anything off is likely a good thing.
Will all this waiting make for a great game? Honestly who knows, the original set the bar for what an action-adventure game could be and did spawn a number of sequels and one really weird disconnected title. For now, we wait and like sand through the hour glass, it might take a while.
