New TV shows from all corners of the Star Wars universe are coming to Disney+
During the recent Walt Disney Company Investor Day, Lucasfilm released details about all their upcoming Star Wars movies and shows, let’s start with the shows, all coming to Disney+
Kicking things off with a look at The Mandalorian season 2 and that a third season will kick off on December 25, 2021. They then announced two spin-off shows from it, Rangers of the New Republic and Ashoka, both created by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.
For Ashoka, fans will get to see more of her because after making her long awaited live-action debut in The Mandalorian, Ahsoka Tano’s story, written by Dave Filoni, will continue in a limited series starring Rosario Dawson. There is no dates on when this might come, but don’t expect it for at least a year.
For Rangers of the New Republic, we have even less details, in fact we only have the following.
Set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, this new live-action series from executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event.
The long discussed Cassian Andor series, now has a name and a release window, called Andor, production has just started up in London, but they released a video about it, to show it off.
Diego Luna, reprising the role of rebel spy Cassian Andor from Rogue One, will be joined by a fantastic new cast that includes Stellan Skarsgard, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma. The only name missing from all of this was that Alan Tudyk, the man behind K2-S0 wasn’t listed, no idea if that is because he is a robot, or an existing character, or maybe he was cut.
In addition to those, we also got word of a new show for Lando Calrisian, A Droid Story, Star Wars: Visions and The Acolyte. Out of all of them, the one that seems the most interesting are the last two, because Visions is letting some of Japans biggest anime houses create new takes on Star Wars.
As for the other show, The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. The show is being created by Leslye Headland, the creator of Russian Doll, so expect some heavy themes.
The other two shows that are worth mentioning is that in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, not only is Ewan McGregor in the show, but Hayden Christensen will return as Anakin Skywalker, or as he is known now, Darth Vader.
“It was such an incredible journey playing Anakin Skywalker,” said Christensen. “Of course, Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on the greatest of terms when we last saw them… It will be interesting to see what an amazing director like Deborah Chow has in store for us all. I’m excited to work with Ewan again. It feels good to be back.”
The other show they showed more of was The Bad Batch, a spin-off show from The Clone Wars. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.
