Star Wars: The TV Shows in development

Star Wars: The TV Shows in development

For the longest time, at least once the cartoons of the 80s finished airing, if you wanted Star Wars, you had to go to a cinema, then Attack of the Clones released and provided George Lucas with a chance to tell more stories from that period.

2003 saw Star Wars: Clone Wars burst onto the screen via Cartoon Network and while it lasted a few seasons, it was replaced in 2008 with the computer animated The Clone Wars, please note the The in the name. While it ran for a few years, then it was wound down in 2014 with its sixth season, but fan support saw it get a 7th season 6 years later, finishing off the story line.

There have been a number of animated shows since The Clone Wars, including a series of shorts series, so just in case you are not aware of how much Star Wars there is on your TV screen, here is everything, again in release order.

  • Star Wars Holiday Special - 1978

  • Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure - 1984

  • Ewoks: The Battle for Endor - 1985

  • Star Wars: Droids - 1985

  • Ewoks - 1985 - 1986

  • Clone Wars - 2003 - 2005

  • The Clone Wars - 2008 - 2020

  • Rebels - 2014 - 2017

  • Resistance - 2018 - 2019

  • The Mandalorian - 2019 - 2023

  • The Book of Boba Fett - 2021

  • The Bad Batch - 2021 - 2023

  • Visions - 2021 - 2023

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi - 2022

  • Andor - 2022

  • Tales of the - 2022 - 2023

  • Ahsoka - 2023

  • Young Jedi Adventures - 2023

All of the shows before Disney+ were animated, as the cost of sci-fi shows were not cheap and with Star Wars having a look and feel that was expected, it would have cost even more. There were also a series of shorts, usually animated that ran over the years, like the Forces of Destiny shorts or the Galactic Pals.

Below are the eras of Star Wars:

  • Dawn Of The Jedi - The discovery of the Force

  • The Old Republic - Started roughly 25,000 years BBY and fell around 4000 years before the same battle

  • The High Republic - Started around 500 years BBY and its peak was about 100 years BBY

  • Fall of the Jedi - This period covers the Prequel Trilogy (Phantom Menace, Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith)

  • Reign of the Empire - This period covers the time between Episode 3 and Episode 4 (Star Wars Rebels, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order)

  • Age of Rebellion - This is the original trilogy (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi)

  • The New Republic - This is set after the events of Episode 6 and before Episode 7 (The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka)

  • Rise of the First Order - This period covers the Sequel Trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Rise of Skywalker)

  • New Jedi Order - Events post Rise of Skywalker

If you wonder what BBY stands for that is ‘Before the Battle of Yavin’, the battle at the end of the original movie.

So now here are all the Star Wars shows that we know about, along with the era that they are to be set in, starting off with the one set to release in a months time.

The Acolyte

Release Date: June 4, 2024 | Era: The High Republic

The Acolyte is only a month away, as of the date of us posting this and will be the first show ever set within The High Republic era. This is not the first instance of that era appearing, as the books and comics started it, with Star Wars Jedi Survivor showing off some elements of the era before, but for many fans this might be their first trip back in time.

The show has been created by Leslye Headland and will focus more on the dark side of the force rather than the light side. The show will take place around 100 years before The Phantom Menace, which means the only character who will be in it will be Yoda, but the rest of cast are playing all new characters.

Skeleton Crew

Release Date: 2024 | Era: The New Republic

In February 2022 it was reported that another show was coming to Disney+ and this one would be created by Jon Watts, the director of all three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies and while reports varied on exactly what ‘Grammar Rodeo’ - its working title, would be, it wouldn’t be until Star Wars Celebration in May 2022 that Jude Law was revealed to be in the show and that it was called Skeleton Crew.

The premises is that the show is considered a coming of age story, where a group of children are attempting to find their way home, with Jude Law’s character trying to help. While Law’s character is considered force sensitive, this is not a story about Jedi or Sith, but rather Lost in Space meets The Goonies. Details beyond the basic premise and that it is set to take place after Return of the Jedi is all we have, even the 2024 release date is not set in stone yet, but that might change once The Acolyte finishes its run.

Andor

Release Date: 2025 | Era: Reign of the Empire

When Andor was first announced, many folks couldn’t work out how a show about a rebel spy/assassin would work and then the first season hit and surprised everyone. We always knew that the series would have two season, but the 12 episode count was a bit of a surprise and while the series aired its first season in 2022, we have had to wait for more information on the second.

We know that filming had started in 2023, but the Writers and Actors strikes of that year delayed production, but with those over, production did start back up. There are reports that the series might air in 2024, but if the Skeleton Crew production is aiming for the same, I can see Andor slipping into 2025. Of course, they could get this year and Skeleton Crew gets 2025, but until Lucasfilm announce things, its all just speculation. I am sharing this before the USA celebrates Star Wars Day, so its possible they will reveal things on the day.

Ahsoka

Release Date: Unknown | Era: The New Republic

There is almost nothing known about season 2 of Ahoska, it was only confirmed to be happening in January of 2024. There are countless plot points that need to be worked out, one sad one of course revolves around the character of Baylan Skoll, who was played by Ray Stevenson who sadly passed away. Given the lack of time between its announcement and now, there is nothing out there for this, so we just need to be paitent.

The Mandalorian

Release Date: Unknown | Era: The New Republic

Way back in 2022, before the third season of The Mandalorian even aired reports surfaced that a fourth season was in development, but there was never direct confirmation. Now series creator Jon Favreau has gone on record stating that he has written a fourth season, but that was before the movie was announced. Even reports later in 2023 about the hopeful start of production on a fourth season were never confirmed and again may have turned into the movie.

Given the movie, if there is a fourth season it could be its own thing, but one that will take place after the movie, or the fourth season could be the movie. There is honestly no way of knowing exactly what the status of The Mandalorian on Disney+ is, but there is plenty more to enjoy if Din takes more time away from the small screen.

So there we go, all that we could find relating to the TV series coming out of a galaxy far, far away. Are you keen on any of the shows that are coming?
