Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is an all new 4v1 game coming later this year
There have been a number of games set within the world of Ghostbusters, from the one that had you join the existing team as its newest member, to the Lego Dimensions expansion, that had you play through the events of the 2016 movie. Now though, developer Illfonic have announced that there there is a big change coming, as you can now slime up as a ghost for the first time, in this 4v1 game.
The game is taking that 4v1 formula that Illfonic have been working on for years, their most recent work being Predator: Hunting Grounds, but expands it to the world of Ghostbusters.
“Ghostbusters is one of the most beloved IPs in the world, so we are pulling out all the stops to make something special and accessible to this diverse fanbase,” said Charles Brungardt, CEO, IllFonic. “If you’re someone who loves the movies or asymmetrical multiplayer games, this was made for you.”
Those who want to answer the call and bust some ghosts, can strap on a Proton Pack and venture out with three other folks, in order to save the public from those ghostly apparitions. In this mode, the viewpoint is locked to the first-person view and players will need to work together to locate the ghost, wrangle it into a space that containment is possible and then capture it within the Ghost Trap. If you want to be more of a scaremate, than a teammate, you can opt to become the ghost and in this role, you will be a playing via the 3rd person perspective. With the ability to fly and teleport between rifts and possess objects lying around each room, in order to sneak by roaming Ghostbusters, you can have the time of your afterlife, as you frighten passersby. Of course, if that doesn’t work, you can use your ghostly powers to summon ghoulish minions at will and of obviously, you can slime folks as well. Check out some screens of the Ghost in action below.
You won’t be running from fight to fright all the time, players will also get a chance to take sometime to visit the Firehouse, where you can upgrade equipment and abilities, and getting some target practice in using the Particle Thrower as well as its different modifications. This is where you will meet Winston Zeddemore, voiced by film star Ernie Hudson.
If you are looking to learn more about the history of the ghosts, then Ray’s Occult Books is where you want to go, complete with Ray Stantz behind the counter, voiced by Ghostbusters creator Dan Aykroyd.
To ensure that players can have a spooktacular time, no matter the side of the fright they happen to be on, the game supports full crossplay. Meaning when the game launches later this year for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, there should always be folks to play with and if not, there is always AI to fill in the slots.
