Games of September

We are now in the first month of Spring, which also means the first month of the onslaught of games to come, well normally. Everyone can agree 2020 has been a different sort of year and while some games have been delayed, most picked up new dates in September and others were always announced for this month.

While not all the games coming, because that list would be long, this is a highlight of some of the best choices for your gaming time, so here we go.

The start of the month has the first game, which is a little rare, but this one is slightly different as the game is out digitally today, but won’t hit local retail stores for a week. Ary is a game that is more along the lines of some old school Zelda’s, complete with items hidden in temples, but it seems to be taking the approach across the board of blending, with some Avatar, (the cartoon) inspired touches. Check out my thoughts from an early hands on with the game here.

Spellbreak is a multiplayer action-spellcasting game where you unleash your inner battlemage. Master elemental magic to fit your playstyle and cast powerful spell combinations to dominate other players across the Hollow Lands. The big addition here is that the game allows for cross-platform multiplayer, so no matter what platform you are on, there should be plenty of people to play with.

There is little to say about the game at this point, you suit up as your favourite Avenger, travel the world, taking down AIM forces and other bad guys.
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a new, hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. The celebration turns deadly when a mysterious enemy causes a catastrophic accident which results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, a sprawling adventure ignites when a determined young woman named Kamala Khan sets out to reassemble and rebuild the Avengers to stop the unchecked power of the secretive new force known as AIM.

Another year, another entry in the long running NBA 2K series and 2K21 is aiming to be the biggest year, with new controls, a new neighbourhood and some big changes to career and GM modes. Fans of the series will enjoy the more randomness that will impact stats, giving you more freedom to replay the modes as you desire, plus the story will have RPG like choices in there, so there will be another reason to go back.

I don’t really know what to say about Tony Hawk at this point, you either know what you are getting and have been playing the game since the 90’s or this is all new for you. Rather than the half step HD version from 8 years ago, this is a full blown remake, containing all the stages from the original games, most of the skaters and more importantly, most of the old songs. But rather than just leave it there, there is a wealth of new content to discover as well.

Remasters are nothing new now, but for a game that had such a big push behind it originally and then flopped, to get another chance, that is something different. KoA was meant to be the next big series, but it never clicked with the gamers around the world, but it seems this version might, because not only does it bring the game back, but next year an all new expansion will release as well.

Crysis, for many years was the benchmark title for your PC, the question, could it run Crysis, was the best way of determining just how good your rig was. While the sequels hit consoles, the original never did and while the platforms this month were due a while ago, some fan feedback had the developers making some changes. The game is already out on Switch, so you can play it there, other platforms will have to wait a few weeks longer.

Ah Sam Stone, the 90’s man from a videogame series that released after the decade ended, if you don’t know what the series is about, it is about dancing with guns. I mean it, you are fast, nimble and able to shoot lots of bullets at lots of enemies and now the game is doubling down across the board, Sam is now faster and more agile, the enemy count is even more impressive and you can dual wield. The game will come to consoles next year, but this year your only option is PC.

The last of the Trilogy and oddly enough, the first game in the series. The original Mafia told an interesting tale, in a pretty enjoyable world and now Hangar 13 have taken that and amped up everything. Visually it is looking stunning, the game world has been fixed and smoothed out, the cars are now able to corner at more than 5km an hour.

If you have the trilogy bought already, this will unlock soon, for the others it will be out at the end of the month

Plenty of games to choose from here, but of course this is just the tip of the iceberg, there are countless being released each week, so get out there and find a game that makes you happy.
