A Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime has been announced

In that same CES press conference where The Last of Us Season 2 got its first trailer, it was revealed that Aniplex would be creating a new anime based around the Legends expansion for Ghost of Tsushima.

The show will release sometime in 2027, so there is a wait ahead for this one, but so far it has some good people behind it. Takanobu Mizuno (Star Wars: Visions "The Duel") will direct the series at Kamikaze Douga, with Gen Urobuchi writing the story composition. Additional staff and cast were not announced at the time of the panel.

The only thing to be worried about is that Aniplex is owned by Sony, who also own Crunchyroll who will be the global streaming place for it. This means that it is a Sony story, being made by Sony and shown by Sony, which means that there might not be anyone willing to be the questioning voice when decisions are being made. It is of course very early, so the fears could be unfounded, but still I will be sceptical for now.

Here are some quotes from the leaders of the various groups involved.

Rahul Purini – President, Crunchyroll

“This project is a testament to the creative synergy within the Sony family, uniting the expertise of PlayStation Studios and PlayStation Productions; the creative team of Sucker Punch Productions and Aniplex; Sony Music’s iconic global artist roster; and Crunchyroll’s fan-first global marketing and distribution footprint. The Ghost of Tsushima anime will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking.”

Asad Qizilbash – Head, PlayStation Productions

“Having already proven the immense quality and versatility of our gaming properties across multiple successful film and television projects, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our first ever anime adaptation. Ghost of Tsushima‘s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series.”

Tom Mackay – President of Premium Content, Sony Music Entertainment

“We are excited to create new opportunities for our artists to engage with such incredible global [intellectual property]. Music plays such a key role in the overall audience viewing experience and we are thrilled to be working alongside our Sony partners to develop compelling content for fans around the world.”

Right now, the only thing we have from the reveal is a piece of visual art, which is likely more of a style piece than anything from the show. Of course, we won’t have to wait until 2027 for a new story in this world as Ghost of Yōtei is expected to release this year. The reported Ghost of Tsushima movie is still happening, though there hasn’t been much movement on that for a while now, you can get a little more insight on that here.
