E3 2014 - World Of Speed Hands On
Car games were limited at this years E3, which means something like World of Speed has a place to show off what its all about.
World of Speed will see you joining the exciting world of street racing, but this is not just about you being number 1 all the time, this is about much, much more. Players who are used to the traditional quests found in other MMO’s will know that they are the real meat of the genre, well of course in a racing MMO you can’t very well be expected to hunt down 10 dragon hides now can you. In fact players will need to master their driving in order to advance here as quests are more like challenges for your abilities. Levelling up your driving skill will test you in many ways, in order to complete these challenges you will need to master drifting, boosting, time challenges and a whole lot more.
Some of you might be wondering though, well those with the faster cars are always going win. Yes that might be the case, but as I said before coming 1st is not always the best way to gain experience. As you make your way through the world, you will unlock new items that can be used to customise your car, making it even better to drive. These items, such as new suspension, gearboxes and more will help improve your car, but the wrong combination could hurt. Adding external items such as spoilers or new grills won’t have any impact to your cars performance, but it might just make it look cooler.
Actually visual additions to the car won’t improve performance at any level, but they will help you define your own style. And if you want you can even join a club where you can build a logo and apply it your car.
In my hands on with the game, I was given two races to complete. Both times it was the same track but with different versions of the same car. Mitsubishi Evo X standard and then customised, and wow what a difference. As I started the first race I found myself getting into the groove of drifting around corners and using the racing line to help achieve amazing times, however once we moved onto the more powerful version of that car, all my experience with the other went out the window.
It should be noted that players wont just go from basic to uber special in one single go, you will add bits and pieces to your cars as you progress, meaning you should do a lot better than I did. In my second race I found myself bouncing off guard rails and crashing through phone boxes, leaving quite the wake of destruction behind me. But as I crossed the finish line I thought to myself, this was fun. Sure I was not the best driver the dev team had ever seen, but they were kind enough to point out that I did pretty well on the final few corners. I think though it helps that the team making the game have got many years of racing game development under their belt with games like Need For Speed and more. In fact, even in the early build I played the game controls amazingly well, much better than you might think in fact.
World of Speed takes what you love about MMO’s and adds the insanely popular car culture into the mix. The game will be free to play and with the clubs, players are sure to find just what they need and want from this world of speed.
