2024 was a quiet year for WB Games, or Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment if you want to get specific, they did see the release of Suicide Squad, but that was really it.

Of course, like most major publishers they did lay off people and while their reported count was much lower than some others, ~200 staff were let go across the various studios. Thankfully they did not close down any of their studios, which is a small silver lining. They did however buy one, as Player First Games was added to the group, bringing MultiVersus in-house entirely.

AVALANCHE SOFTWARE

Last Game Released: Hogwarts Legacy | Series: Disney Infinity series

After releasing Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, across all platforms, the game got some updates in 2024, but mostly the studio was quiet. It was revealed in October 2024 that the game had sold more than 30 million copies and that due to the success, a sequel was in development.

With development on the first game taking 6 years, if you scratch the engine development and all the other aspects, you might get 3 years for the sequel. There is no timeline for a release, so as such it is not expected we will hear about the new game for a while. Between now and then the first game might get the occasional small update, but that would be it for this group.

MONOLITH PRODUCTIONS

Last Game Released: Middle-earth: Shadow of War | Series: Middle-earth series, F.E.A.R. series

It has now been over 3 years since this studios game was revealed, with Wonder Woman only showing a trailer with a logo and nothing else, that was in December 2021. Reports surfaced in June 2024 that the game was still happening, but development was not going smoothly, but in October 2024 the studio finally updated their website to admit they were making the game, it was notably absent prior to that.

There were also reports in 2024 that the WB Games Montreal studio had been asked to assist with development work, but nothing about that was ever confirmed. The studio has been really quiet and I mean really quiet, since their revealed that they were working on the game, with many of their social posts just celebrating other WB Games studios releases. If the game has had issues, then I would not expect to see it for a while, but either way, they need to acknowledge that its still alive, because people are starting to wonder.

NETHERREALM STUDIOS

Last Game Released: Mortal Kombat 1 | Series: Mortal Kombat series, Injustice series

After getting Mortal Kombat 1 out the door in 2023, 2024 saw the studio keep the fight going by adding the promised DLC fighters and releasing the expansion Khaos Reigns, which itself comes with a slew of new fighters. Just today saw the release of Conan the Barbarian to the game, leaving just the T-1000 to come.

Given how poorly Mortal Kombat 1 sold, the recent Khaos Reigns expansion did even less, I can’t imagine that these guys will be allowed to create something new again. But they are working on something, as a number of job listings are up, mostly for art related roles. The studio for a while bounced back and forth between Mortal Kombat and Injustice, but who knows if there will be an Injustice 3. Given that the last game ended with a choice, it would be a challenge for the developers to make a story that helps both sides feel like they were right. The problem is that outside of those job listings, the studio itself just has no online presence, their official websites news section talks about Injustice 2 and only that. If the studio has a third year of content coming for Mortal Kombat 1, it would make sense we hear about it around June, but if they have something else cooking, then we won’t see their name this year.

Player First Games

Last Game Released: MultiVersus | Series: None

Player First Games was picked up in 2024 by WB Games, which makes sense given they spent years developing a game made from characters from DC, Hanna Barbera, Looney Tunes, Cartoon Network and HBO.

The game added a number of new fighters in 2024, including Raven and Nubia. Given that they are now apart of the WB family, I don’t expect their priorities to shift much in 2025. More new characters and updates will come to MultiVersus, the only change I could see would be if they bring the game to Switch 2.

ROCKSTEADY STUDIOS

Last Game Released: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League | Series: Batman Arkham series

2024 was meant to be a big year for Rocksteady Studios, because after years and year and then another year long delay, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League released. While the game has its fans, there is no doubt that what was offered was nothing like what players were after, especially from a studio that delivered some incredible single player titles. While the game got four seasons of content, the last releasing at the start of 2025, it also ended its run as no more content is coming for the game, the last big update also removed the online aspect of the game.

As for what is next, well that is up for debate. Right now the studio only has one open role they are appearing to be looking for, a head of production and it offers no insights as to what is next. There are rumours that the studio is returning to Batman, but again those are rumours. The studio also lost a number of roles in two rounds of layoffs at the end of last year, which further puts any damper on them having something else going on. Given that WB Games management demanded a multiplayer focused game and fans did not react well to it, we could see the studio being allowed to make a good game again. But as they quite literally just finished work on one, the odds of them having anything new to show this year is slim at best.

TT GAMES

Last Game Released: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga | Series: LEGO Games…

It has now been more than 2 years, almost 3 years in fact, since Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga released and in between that game and now, the studio has only released some DLC characters for the game, with most of those out in 2022. So what has the studio been working on since then?

Honestly, they are working on a new Lego game, it is TT Games, of course their next game was Lego based. At the time of writing the studio had a few open roles and they are odd, one of them is for a Lego modeller, someone to make the digital versions of Lego sets and they want someone who has Lego vehicle experience. Another job requires combat designer experience for “an exciting new LEGO game based on a major IP.” So given those two roles, there can be only one outcome from this, we are getting Lego Mad Max. Well that is a lie, I don’t actually know what their next game is, but given the time between releases, a reveal of it this year would make sense.

All the studios below have the full name of WB Games and then the location in the name, ie WB Games Boston. To keep it simple, we are just using the studio location.

MONTRÉAL

Last Game Released: Gotham Knights | Series: Batman: Arkham Origins

The Montreal branch of WB Games has been sort of quiet since they shipped Gotham Knights, there were reports in 2024 that they were assisting Monolith Productions on Wonder Woman, though they were never confirmed. It was reported and sadly was confirmed, that just days before the holiday break almost 100 staff were let go from the studio.

While the reports about them working on Wonder Woman do make some sense, there were also job listings last year that indicate that could be more than hope. One job listing requested a programmer to work on single player game, made in Unreal Engine 5, but as the engine for Wonder Woman is unknown, it is the only roadblock on that listing before for that game. I personally don’t believe that the studio is working with Monolith Productions, if only because they are looking for their own Creative Director and you don’t have two teams with their CD working on the same game, the old adage of too many cooks comes to mind. So what are they working on, who knows, fans want Superman and that could be a thing, but until they actually announce it, we are likely going to be left wondering.

BOSTON

Last Game Released: Game of Thrones: Conquest | Series: Batman: Arkham Underworld, The Lord of the Rings Online

The Boston branch of WB Games is now known for their mobile work, with Game of Thrones: Conquest being their most recent game, well I say recent but it launched in 2017. Mobile games are harder to track down, as things are often not revealed until something is made public, but the studio has kept it going at least, so there is that.

Last year we found a few open roles that pointed to new works happening and this year I was able to confirm that a new title is in development at the studio, the catch is that there is no word on what it is. With some 200 staff at the location, it could be something bigger than a mobile game, their history does have richer experiences to draw from. For now, until they announce, we are just going to be left waiting to hear.

NEW YORK

Not a main developer, the studio tends to focus more on tools and analytics of games, in order to help other studios get things done on time. As such, there is no game expected from them this year, or likely any year.

SAN DIEGO

Last Game Released: None | Series: None

We are now entering the 6th year since this studio was founded and in that time, they have done nothing. The studio has been hiring, but there is nothing on what this new AAA game they are making is meant to be. Now they could have of course supported other WB Games studios in that time, but there is nothing confirming that.

At this point, they either need to show their game or close down their studio, because all this time and nothing, it never bodes well and sadly, the studio has no pedigree that they can fall back onto.

SAN FRANCISCO

Last Game Released: Harry Potter: Wizards Unite | Series: Fantastic Beasts: Cases From the Wizarding World

The last game this group released was Wizards Unite, which has since shut down, but they did assist with the development of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.

Given they are a smaller mobile focused developer, we have no idea what they are up to and without any public game to update, we might not know for a while.
