Warner Bros Games kills off three studios and the Wonder Woman game
Warner Bros. Games have officially announced that they are closing down three of their studios, one of which never got a game out the door and one they just bought last year.
The biggest punch to the gut for fans is for Monolith Productions, which created the amazing F.E.A.R series, but more recently the two middle-earth games. In December 2021, they were revealed to be working on a new Wonder Woman game, with the studios closure by Warner Bros. that game is also cancelled.
The other studios closures are Player First Games, which was created a few years back to make Multiversus, which was then bought last year in June, but their game was killed just a few weeks ago.
The last studio to be closed is that of Warner Bros. Games San Diego, which was founded back in 2019 and never released a game.
The company released a statement to Kotaku about the decision, which is below. But honestly, there is legit nothing they can say that makes this right. The studio for years kept forcing studios to make live-service games, when they could see those games were failing constantly, like 1 out of 20 games would survive and they still kept at it. 2024 saw them release Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League after years of delays and a tepid launch and then later in the year they dropped another multiplayer focused game in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which never took off.
We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises -– Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.
The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.
When we pulled together our Warner Bros 2025 Preview, we called out the lack of progress on Wonder Woman, but we had no predictions on Multiversus, as the closure of that game was a shock to everyone. This is sadly not unlikely to be the last time we hear of bad news from the publisher, as Netherrealm Games has not been doing well with Mortal Kombat 1 and TT Games have not released anything in almost 3 years, same with their Montreal and Boston studios.
For those impacted we send our thoughts and hopes that they land on their feet soon.
