The September Xbox console update adds an important VRR option and more

Console updates are happening much quicker, with Xbox delivering some very welcome ones and some that are hot garbage, the latest one falls into the welcome group.

While Xbox are shouting more about the inclusion of streaming games straight to Discord from your console, the actual worthwhile inclusion in the update is that the Xbox Series consoles now support adaptive VRR.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) allows your TV or monitor to dynamically adjust its refresh rate based on the frame rate of the content you’re viewing to give you a smooth, artifact-free experience while you game.

All that sounds great, but what it can do when watching a movie or tv show, is leave your image feeling like its running at odd rates randomly, speeding up in some parts while the console tries to push out a different refresh rate. With this new update you can now select if you want VRR to be “Always On,” “Gaming Only,” or “Off.”

The update also lets you stream games from your Xbox to Discord, redeem Microsoft Rewards in more places, ask friends if there is room to join the game and more.

There is also a PC app update as well this time. The Xbox App for PC now has new features, faster performance, and celebrations for upcoming games. There are also improvements to game details page load times, which was a big problem before. If you don’t use the app, then none of this matters, but if you do they are very welcome additions.

You can read all about the update here, just know that the update will roll out over the next few days, so you may not see it right away.
