The Maxi-Geek PlayStation Christmas Gift Guide

The holidays are fast approaching and that means that you will have to brave either the in person stores, or fight the frustration of an online checkout, in order to secure those important presents.

This year, we decided to throw our hat into the ring on the gift guide front, to suggest what we think are some of the best games, gear and goodies, available. This time we are talking about PlayStation, specifically games for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

In order to be considered for the list, we looked at two crucial elements, was it a good game and did it provide great value for money. Scouring through hundreds of games, these are what we suggest, for that PlayStation fan in your life.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy is a series that has been telling stories for almost as long as videogames have been around, and the most recent release is perhaps the most iconic story of them all. The remake of Final Fantasy VII got a lot of people excited when it was officially announced as coming and when people started to play it, they realised that it was treated with a lot of care.

We rated it fairly high and noted that fans of the original would love this modern take on it, of course newcomers are welcome as it is perhaps the most accessible game in the series to date and that is saying something.

The Last of Us Part II

Following up on the incredible The Last of Us, the sequel had a lot to live up to and for the most part it was nailed across the board. The game tells a story about what lengths people are willing to go to, in order to get revenge against those that wronged us.

While it does get a little long in the tooth, it is a spectacularly execute version of the argument that videogames are art, it is not a game for those under 18 or even those that might be a little squeamish, but if you are looking for a game that will challenge almost everything, this is one to look out for.

Star Wars Squadrons

Star Wars is a varied playground of stories, told in multiple mediums, but it had been so long since we got the chance to sit in the cockpit of an X-Wing or Tie Fighter and blast those who would do us harm from the sky. That is what Squadrons allows for, as it contains a story that swaps back and forth between both sides of a conflict, providing you with two different and intertwining tales.

Add to that, a massive suite of multiplayer modes, including the fantastic Fleet Battles, which are multi-staged fights that have you defending or attacking and with a good team, can last for quite a while.

Mafia Trilogy

The Mafia Trilogy combines three incredible games on their own, into one amazing package and more than that, it brings the first two games up to the modern standard of gaming. Mafia 3 is the complete edition that was already released onto PlayStation 4, but the addition of the remastered Mafia 2 and the completely remade Mafia 1 makes this a wonderful collection.

Remaking the first game was actually a bit of a genius move, not only did it need it, but many gamers who played 2 or 3, never played the original. The team behind the series were able to keep everything that made it great, but add new layers of depth, to make it even better. In addition, each game has a nice solid length to enjoy, making it a great item for any collection.

Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales

After 2018’s Spider-Man, it was always assumed that PlayStation would return to the world of New York that they had crafted, with the talented Insomniac Games. Miles was a character in that game, but the news that he would get his own game, to launch with the PlayStation 5, was massive, well I say game, but it was more of an expansion.

Regardless of its main story length, there are collectables, side missions and oh yeah, swinging around New York City like Spider-man, which is so very welcome. If you are buying for someone who has a PlayStation 5, you can also pick the game up with a remastered Spider-Man included.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Another game that is on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Sackboy is a very different type of experience normally released by PlayStation Studios. The game takes the characters and charm of the Little Big Planet series and translates them into a platformer, if you think of Mario games, you are on the right track.

But while this is now a platform with plenty of space, there is still many elements of Little Big Planet in it, including the costumes and multiplayer. With dozens, upon dozens of levels, all containing countless collectables and challenges, not to mention the actual challenge levels, there is a lot to do in this one.

Ghost of Tsushima

The last exclusively PlayStation 4 release, Ghost of Tsushima gives players the chance to run around a feudal Japan, living out their samurai dream. As Jin Sakai, you will scour the island of Tsushima for people to help you fight back against the Mongol invasion and rescue your clan leader.

The game offers a massive word, with plenty to discover and do, but more than that, it is perhaps one of the most stylistically beautiful games created in the last generation. The addition of a multiplayer mode, which was added just recently, provides a lot more replayability to the game as well.

Cyberpunk 2077

While not out yet, Cyberpunk 2077 will be in stores just in time for the holidays, as long as another delay doesn’t appear. Set in the futuristic Night City, you will take control of V, a character that you design from the gender out and will go on to do whatever it is you want.

Alongside the countless options for mischief is a tale that has you trying to help out the spirit? of Johnny Silverhand, the leader singer for the in-game band Samurai. The path you take and the actions you choose will shape everything around you, so there is a lot of replayability to enjoy in this one.
