The fight is done as MultiVersus announces its ending, barely a year after it released
Not even a full 12 months after it releases, WB Games and Player First Games have announced that MultiVersus will no longer get any new content after Season 5 wraps on May 30. The game will also be delisted from stores at that time, along with all online servers being closed down.
The full statement can be found here, but basically no one was playing the game. For those who were DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny will be the final two characters added to the game.
The game has stopped letting players buy things with real money as well, though anyone who has any existing Gleamium can still spend it.
The game of course first launched in June 2022 via an open beta, but then in June 2023 was taken offline and then launched again as a full game in May 2024. People seemed to be on board with the original release, but as it was a beta, things changed all the time. It did not however stop the studio asking people to pay money for items for a game that was not completed.
The games roster will end up at 35 characters, covering brands like The Matrix to Adventure Time, Gremlins to Rick and Morty, with of course DC and Looney Tunes being a big part of the line up. The game did get one original character, Reindog, but I don’t know many people that played as that one.
This is the third live service game from WB to bomb and the second in the past 12 months, well second within the past few weeks as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League only got 4 seasons of content for its release. The other recent bomb was Gotham Knights, so with three black marks to their name, four if you count how little Mortal Kombat 1 has sold, one can only hope that the executives start paying proper attention to gamers and deliver proper solo story driven adventures again.
WB Games had a bad 2024 and with this being one big piece of news in the first month of the new year, 2025 might not do so well for them either. We included the publisher in our 2025 Publisher Preview series, but it might not make the cut in 2026.
