Super Mario Bros. is getting a new animated film in 2026

In a move that should honestly be of no surprise to anyone, Nintendo and Illumination have announced that they are working together again to create a new movie based on the world of Super Mario Bros.

Given that the first movie is currently the 17th highest grossing movie of all time at $1.36 Billion US, a sequel was almost confirmed from that alone. Perhaps the best news though is that the folks leading the charge are the same from the first movie.

The movie will be produced by Nintendo and Universal Pictures, the same as the first movie, with both Chris Meledandri, Founder and CEO of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director, Fellow of Nintendo leading from the respective groups.

The directors for this release are the same as the first time, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, which makes sense as they did a great job the first time around. As for the movies writer, Matthew Fogel is back on deck.

The movie is in development, with animation expected to start quite soon, but there is at least 2 years until its release, so best not get to excited for it just now.

You can hear direct from Miyamoto-san in the video below.
