Settle it in MultiVersus, a new fighter featuring DC heroes and cartoon royalty
WB Games have announced MultiVersus, their own take on the Super Smash Bros genre, but instead of Nintendo characters, it is built from a stable of the biggest icons from DC, Cartoon Network, HBO and more, check out the reveal trailer below.
Featuring matches with a strong emphasis on online cooperative gameplay, every fighter will be outfitted with a deep set of combat mechanics that distinguish the game’s fresh take on 2 vs. 2 gameplay. This allows combatants to boast customizable movesets that combine dynamically with other characters as they battle for supremacy.
From Wonder Woman and her Lasso of Truth attack being unexpectedly paired with Shaggy and his sandwich projectile, to Arya Stark’s face-swapping ability being used to complement Superman’s laser vision, the impossible can become possible through surprising team combinations and matchups.
“With MultiVersus we are creating a distinct competitive game that allows us to combine a deep roster of celebrated WarnerMedia franchises for gamers to enjoy,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “We are partnering with the talented team at Player First Games to bring together a free-to-play, online platform fighter with a wealth of iconic characters that fans know and love, from Wonder Woman and Bugs Bunny to Shaggy and Arya from Game of Thrones. And this is just the beginning, as we are excited to support upcoming seasons and ongoing game content.”
“MultiVersus is a dream project for our team at Player First Games, and we’re excited to officially reveal the game,” said Tony Huynh, Co-Founder & Game Director, Player First Games. “We’ve built MultiVersus from the ground up to be a cooperative, social game that embraces teamwork and strategy. We’re also focused on providing first class online gameplay through dedicated server-based rollback netcode so that friends and rivals can enjoy a seamless competitive experience as they duke it out with our diverse roster of characters.”
The roster so far is varied with a few DC staples, some cartoon legends and more modern cartoons, but beyond just looking like the characters, (looking at you Nickelodeon) they will sound as you expect, as they have gotten many of the actors you know from playing the characters to return and voice them. Here is the roster and actors for them so far:
Batman voiced by Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: Arkham series)
Superman voiced by George Newbern (Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, Injustice 2)
Wonder Woman voiced by Abby Trott (Carmen Sandiego)
Harley Quinn voiced by Tara Strong (Batman Ninja, Batman: Arkham series)
Shaggy voiced by Matthew Lillard (Scooby-Doo)
Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry voiced by Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes Cartoons)
Arya Stark voiced by Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones)
Jake the Dog voiced by John DiMaggio (Adventure Time)
Finn the Human voiced by Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time)
Steven Universe voiced by Daniel DiVenere (Spirit Riding Free)
Garnet voiced by Estelle (Steven Universe)
Reindog voiced by Andrew Frankel (Jellystone)
One of the additions to the game is that it will offer up skins for characters, giving them looks that pull from their various histories and given some of these characters have 80 years to draw from, the potential is almost limitless.
There is no word on a release date for the game, but when it does release it will land on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and support cross-play, so no matter where you want to play, there should always be someone to fight with, oh its also free to play, for some reason.
