Portal is getting a special update this November, with Nvidia doing the heavy lifting

This November will mark the 15th anniversary of Portal, which also just launched on Switch, but for those who have been enjoying the game on PC, things are about to get shiny as a special update is coming, allowing RTX into the game.

The update, which is free to all owners of the game on PC, will enable Real-time ray tracing, making the world come alive like never before.

This RTX upgrade builds-upon the work on done with Quake II and Minecraft, but is extra special, as the tool used to make Portal with RTX will be released for free, allowing you to give the RTX treatment to other classic games. The system they used is called NVIDIA RTX Remix, and with this ingenious modding platform, anyone can add ray tracing with just a few clicks, allowing modders the tools to make ambitious remasters, even for games that were previously unmoddable.

Simply press a hotkey to import a game, use AI to enhance materials, build custom assets using Omniverse, and export an RTX Mod complete with ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 3, and NVIDIA Reflex. RTX Remix elevates modding to a whole new level. You can learn more about RTX Remix here and the results are quite special.

As for Portal, you can wishlist the RTX version now, if you own the game it will be free, no word on if you can buy this version, though given its marked as DLC, it is unlikely. For now, check out some before and after shots below.
