PlayStation Stars is bringing rewards to players, by simply playing games
PlayStation have announced that later this year, PlayStation Stars will be released to all players, giving everyone a chance to earn rewards, by playing games, earning trophies and other activities.
There are a few ways that players will be able to earn rewards, the first and perhaps most straight forward is what PlayStation are calling, the Monthly Check-in, which just requires you to play any game. Another option is to take part in tournament and win then, or perhaps you have been a trophy hunter your entire PlayStation life and if you are, you can earn that way as well.
Once you have started doing any of the above, or other options, you will earn loyalty points, which can then be redeemed in a special part of the PlayStation Account, for things like credit for your PlayStation Store Wallet, or even PlayStation Store products, though there is no word on if that is digital items or physical ones.
If you are a PlayStation Plus member and you join, you will also earn points for every purchase you make in the store, so much like Nintendo does with their Gold Coins. There isn’t any details about how you earn per dollar, but it is nice to see that you can earn discounts by buying digital games.
Now we get to the weird part, I will let the PlayStation Blog explain this, so you can get their word about it:
Also, as part of PlayStation Stars, we are unveiling a new type of reward called “digital collectibles” which are as diverse as our portfolio of products and franchises. They are digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation. There will always be a new collectible to earn, an ultra-rare collectible to strive for, or something surprising to collect just for fun.
Now I know that they are not called NFT’s, but by their definition they are very much those things, just instead of there being only one, there is going to be multiple. The problem is that they are saying you could earn a digital figurine, which is nice, but where will it go? There is nothing on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, the PlayStation Mobile app or even the website, that you could view them and even if there was, it defeats the purpose of a figuring. They look best when you can view them at a glance, on a shelf, not having to navigate menus to locate them.
There is still a lot more we don’t yet know about this program, including when it will roll out, the only thing we do know is that the rollout will be staggered, much like the recent PlayStation Plus tiers, but beyond that we are just waiting.
So what say you? Are you looking to sign up for a rewards program on your PlayStation?
