Marathon extracts a September release date and first details

As was promised, Bungie held a live stream over the weekend and with it fully revealed Marathon. This might share the same name as a game from the companies past, but it is very much a different game. Check out the reveal cinematic for this team based extraction shooter.

In Marathon, players inhabit a Runner, a cybernetic mercenary scouring the remains of a lost colony of Tau Ceti IV for fortune and power. Players team up in crews of three as they battle rival Runner teams and hostile security forces for weapons and upgrades. Survive and everything they’ve scavenged is theirs to keep for future runs on Tau Ceti IV—or if they’re brave enough, a journey to the derelict Marathon ship that hangs above.

If that sounds complicated, it isn’t as Bungie have a history of taking complex things and making them understandable. Below is the gameplay reveal trailer and a gameplay overview trailer, which should put some context around the action.

The big hook is again that you are not a human doing the leg work, but are instead a Runner that you control remotely. It is important to note that these are not quite robots, but rather cybernetic mercenaries and those cybernetics are what give them their abilities.

Much like other shooters around there will be seasons, we can only hope this game lasts longer than the previous multiplayer only shooter from PlayStation. The first season will launch soon after the game does and will offer players new end game challenges, ranked play, new stories and community events, plus much more.

The game is set to launch on September 23rd for PlayStation 5, PC via Steam and Xbox Series X|S. The game will offer full cross-play and cross-save, so players can enjoy the action with friends, no matter which console they are on.

While you might think a game like this would be free, but no it will cost money. It won’t be a full priced game, so a local price of $50 would seem right, but the actual price has not been revealed. If you want to learn a little more about the game, the PlayStation Blog has more details you can discover.
