Lenovo has announced three new Legion Go handhelds

As part of their CES 2025 offerings, Lenovo have announced three models of their Legion Go range of gaming handhelds, with one of them being available this month, at least in the USA.

There are two models of the Lenovo Legion Go S, one white and one black and the difference is that the black model will use the new SteamOS. Apart from the operating system on board, most of the other specs are going to be the same.

Lenovo’s vision for gaming has always been to deliver the most powerful and innovative technology, empowering gamers to play their way at their best. With ground-breaking devices like the Legion Go S, the world’s first officially licensed handheld powered by SteamOS, and our redesigned Legion Pro laptops featuring stunning OLED displays, we’re redefining what gaming experiences can be. These innovations are designed with competitive gamers and gaming students in mind, providing the performance, adaptability, and versatility needed to excel both in the game and in academic fields like STEM. By combining cutting-edge hardware, gamer-focused AI-powered software, and new form factors, Lenovo Legion is empowering the next generation of gamers to push boundaries and achieve their goals.

Starting with the Windows OS model, it features an 8” WUXGA 16:10 120Hz1 PureSight touch display, either the exclusive to Lenovo Legion Go AMD Ryzen™ Z2 Go processor or AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor3, up to 32GB of 7500Mhz LPDDR5X RAM2, and a 3-cell 55.5Whr battery, the Lenovo Legion Go S (8”, 1) is built to play PC games in a portable package at just 730g.

Wi-Fi 6e support, a pair of USB 4 ports on the top, and a microSD card reader make it easy to connect a display and other peripherals, making the Lenovo Legion Go S (8”, 1) a modular device capable of handling home gaming duties when not on the road.

The availability for this one will begin in January 2025 for the USA, with more variants coming out in May 2025. A local price and date is not known. The starting price in USD is $730, so I would expect this to jump up to $1200 or higher here.

For the SteamOS model, the colour of it is called Nebula Violet, because while it might look black at first, it is actually purple. Beyond the operating system and colour, everything else is the same. Because it is a Steam based device, OS wise, it will include the usual line up of features like cloud saves that mean a seamless transition between PC gaming and handheld, Remote Play that streams games to the device from a PC, full Steam Store and Steam Library access.

The release for this will be in May 2025, with a local price and date not yet known. The starting price in USD is $500, so I would wager between $800-$900 for us.

Finally, the last of the three devices is the Lenovo Legion Go (8.8″, 2) – Prototype, which is an overhaul of the original model that was released back in 2023. While final production details are still being refined, the prototype features up to the new AMD Ryzen™ Z2 Extreme processor with RDNA™ 3.5 graphics and up to 32GB of 7500Mhz LPDDR5X RAM2, as well as a native landscape 8.8” 16:10 144Hz5 500nit OLED PureSight touch display with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for stunning visuals and smooth gameplay.

The prototype also highlights ergonomic refinements, including rounded Lenovo Legion TrueStrike controllers with a circular D-pad for faster, more accurate inputs. With up to 2TB of SSD storage and a 74Whr battery. As this one is not finalised yet, there is no release date or price, but I would imagine it won’t be cheap.

So Lenovo are offering up a trio of devices, any of them strike your fancy? Personally we are keen to see what the SteamOS looks like on non-Valve hardware.
