Horizon Forbidden West editions are detailed and miss the mark on being helpful to gamers

PlayStation have outlined the editions of Horizon Forbidden West that players can order, in order to get their hands on the game and one of the things is just pure greed.

The game is coming to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on February 18 and will come in a variety of offerings, from standard to super special. For those that just want the game and nothing else, there is the Standard Edition, which is the cheapest.

Next up is the Digital Deluxe, which comes with the game and is how you have to get the game, if you want to have it on both generations, there is no free upgrade from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5.

Here is everything included within the Digital Deluxe:

  • 2 Special Outfits (Carja Behemoth Elite and Nora Thunder Elite)

  • 2 Special Weapons (Carja Behemoth Short Bow and Nora Thunder Sling)

  • In-game Resources Pack including ammunition, potions, and travel packs

  • In-game Apex Clawstrider Machine Strike Piece

  • Exclusive Photo Mode pose and face paint

  • Digital Art Book

  • Digital Soundtrack

  • Digital Version of The Sunhawk, the first Horizon Zero Dawn graphic novel

There is also a Special Edition of the game coming, but that contains a steelbook case and a mini artbook, which means retailers for that one, as of right no local retailers have said they are stocking it, here is what it looks like.

The big offering, in both size and price will be the Collector’s Edition, which along with the game on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, the steelbook shown above, mini artbook and a bunch of digital content, also comes with a massive Tremortusk statue, with a little Aloy to pose with it.

Here is the full breakdown of what is included, in addition to the game:

  • Horizon Forbidden West SteelBook Display Case

  • Download code for the game will be supplied via voucher in the box.

  • A custom sculpted Tremortusk and Aloy statue

    • Statues will require some assembly; detailed instructions will be provided with the box!

  • Mini Art Book

  • 2 Special Outfits (Carja Behemoth Elite and Nora Thunder Elite)

  • 2 Special Weapons (Carja Behemoth Short Bow and Nora Thunder Sling)

  • In-game Resources Pack including ammunition, potions, and travel packs

  • In-game Apex Clawstrider Machine Strike Piece

  • Exclusive Photo Mode pose and face paint

  • Digital Soundtrack

  • Digital Version of The Sunhawk, the first Horizon Zero Dawn graphic novel

Finally there is the Regalia Edition of the game, which features most of the same content as above, but the Tremortusk statue is enhanced, plus there are more physical goods, like art cards and machine pieces.

All that said though, we have to address the problems, the lack of free upgrade and the lack of a disc in the special editions.

First up, the upgrade, since the release of the PlayStation 5, almost every company has offered a free upgrade to owners of the PlayStation 4 version of a game, for when they get a PlayStation 5, Xbox has done the same. Sadly, Electronic Arts and 2K have not and instead tied them behind cross-gen bundles, making you pay a little more to get both versions, it was a shit move then and PlayStation themselves doing it, is still a shit move now.

This is ties into the second problem, no disc with the Special Editions or higher, meaning that if you want that amazing Tremortusk statue, either of them, you get a code and have to download the game to your PlayStation console of choice. The problem is, some folks don’t have internet speeds required to download a game that is going to be massive, on the day it comes out, if they get the fancy editions.

So now, you have to decide, if you want the game on PlayStation 4, because getting a PlayStation 5 is so difficult right now, then you have to go digital, because even if you buy the disc release in store, there is no way to upgrade it once you own it. You can’t pay anything to get the PlayStation 5 version, you are just stuck with the PlayStation 4 release and while it will play via backwards compatibility, it won’t be the best version of the game.

There are a load of bad decisions here and hopefully PlayStation can address them before release
