Horizon Forbidden West changes course on its upgrade offerings

Last week, PlayStation unveiled the many editions of Horizon Forbidden West that players can look to order for themselves, well not the big ones as they are already sold out, but the rest.

One massive screw up was that they removed the free upgrade from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, that they had previously said players would get free upgrades for all launch games, which Horizon Forbidden West was meant to be one of them, but when they revealed it wasn’t going to remain that way, people got angry.

Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan, posted to the pre-order story on the PlayStation Blog to confirm that a free upgrade would be offered for the game.

Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.

Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.

I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The other interesting part of that statement is that going forward, the games that Sony make for both platforms will require a paid upgrade free, similar to what Ghost of Tsushima did recently.

Sadly, they still have not address the lack of a disc within the collector’s editions, which people were also upset about, but at least now you can get the game on February 18 for PlayStation 4 and when the PlayStation 5 stops being a mythical item, you can upgrade to that for free.
