Game Builder Garage aims to make programming pro-gaming this June
Nintendo love their out of nowhere reveals and that is what this is, Game Builder Garage is a new way for players of all ages to create their own games, from very basic, to complex, all with their Switch console, check out the trailer below.
By connecting colourful creatures called Nodon, anyone can enjoy learning how to create their own game through fun, guided lessons that cover the basics of visual game programming – and no prior experience is necessary.
Nodon are creatures with big personalities that are used to help build your games from the ground up. There are dozens of Nodon in Game Builder Garage, each with a unique function, and you can learn how to build games just by connecting them in various ways.
For example, you can create and move a human-like character with an analogue stick just by connecting Stick Nodon with Person Nodon. Thus, you will get to learn the basics of game programming in a fun and intuitive way. You’ll be able to create a wide variety of different types of video games too – from side-scrolling platformers, to kart racers, to space blasters.
The game offers a few ways to play and learn, at the start you will enter Lesson Mode, which as the name suggests will teach you the tools of the trade. This won’t be walls of text though as they are all interactive lessons. One you have completed the lessons or feel you are ready, you can jump into Free Programming, which lets you bring everything you can imagine to life, including your own music, effects and even custom art.
Once you have built your level, you can share it for the world to see and if you discover a game that is incredible, in the Free Programming mode, you can actually pull back the curtain and discover how it was made.
The game is set to release on June 11th, so a month or so from now and when it is out, those who want, can also use a mouse to help create levels, just no mouse for play. Check out some of the screens released for the game below.
