Disney+ detailed, including new Star Wars and Marvel shows
Disney has released solid details on Disney+ their upcoming Netflix competitor, including its American release date and price, sadly, there is no time frame on when we might get it, but at least we can look forward to content.
The service is going live on November 12th and will set subscribers back $7 a month, so like $10 here, with that they will get access to ALL of the classic Disney movies and a host of original content.
Star Wars
Launching the same day as the service will be Star Wars first ever live action TV show, The Mandalorian. The show is created by Jon Favreau, who directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2, as well as the upcoming Lion King, but the first episode has been directed by Dave Filoni, the man behind the incredibly successful Star Wars animated TV show.
The highly anticipated series features an all-star cast that includes Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte. Set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order, the series follows a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
If that was not enough for you, Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk are teaming up again as the loveable spy/assassin Cassian Andor and K-2SO respectively, as an all new Star Wars TV series is being crafted around the two characters. The only thing we know is that it is being set before the events of Rogue One, which given how that ended, is not surprising.
Marvel
If you are not a fan of a Galaxy Far, Far Away and prefer your action to be inspired by the pages of a comic, then fear not as Marvel Studios has announced three, that is 3, live action TV shows coming to Disney+, the first of which will arrive within the first 12 months.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will see stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan return to reprise their roles from the Captain America and Avengers movies.
If bad boys are your speed, then you will be happy to know that Tom Hiddleston is returning to the role of Loki, with a new series. There are no known details about it, but if you have seen Infinity War, expect the show to take place before that.
Those looking for a more romantic show can look forward to WandaVision, which will see Elizabeth Olsen will return as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany will reprise his role as The Vision in the new Marvel Studios series. Again, no other details are known, but both shows are expected within the second 12 months of the service going live, so anywhere between Nov 2020 and October 2021.
Finally, as far as Marvel goes, a new animated show is coming that asks, What If…? Marvel Studios’ first animated series, taking inspiration from the comic books of the same name. Each episode will explore a pivotal moment from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turn it on its head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.
Animation
Those who are after a more animated flavour overall will be happy to know that Star Wars The Clones Wars will be debuting their final season. The show was cancelled when Disney bought Lucasfilm, though a bunch of episodes were released on Netflix as a sixth season, but fans still wanted more, so a final seventh season is happening, we even got a trailer last year for it, but now we know when to expect it, it will hit Disney+ in the first 12 months.
On the lighter side of animation, Pixar favourites Mike and Sulley are making a screaming return to the world of Monsters Inc, with a new show, Monsters At Work, which is set six months after the end of the original movie.
The show follows new character Tylor Tuskmon, an eager and talented young mechanic who works on the Monsters Inc. facilities team but dreams of working his way up to the Laugh Floor. Returning cast members Billy Crystal, John Goodman, John Ratzenberger, Bob Peterson, and Jennifer Tilly will join new cast members Ben Feldman, Kelly Marie Tran, Henry Winkler, Lucas Neff, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Stanton.
Phineas and Ferb fans are getting a new movie, the well loved children’s book Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made is getting a movie and finally, Willem Dafoe is lending his talents to the role of Leonhard Seppala, a man who rides a sled in 1925’s Alaska, with his lead dog Togo, which is the name of this movie.
Documentary
But it is not just new cartoons and comic adaptations, documentaries will be apart of the platform, one of which is The World According to Jeff Goldblum.
Through the prism of Jeff Goldblum’s always inquisitive and highly entertaining mind, nothing is as it seems in this new series. Each episode is centered around something we all love—like sneakers or ice cream—as Jeff pulls the thread on these deceptively familiar objects and unravels a wonderful world of astonishing connections, fascinating science and history, amazing people, and a whole lot of surprising big ideas and insights.
Or if you are an animal lover there is Magic of Animal Kingdom, which will take a look behind the scenes of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Disney’s Epcot theme parks. In the heart of Central Florida, a team of more than 1,000 highly respected animal-care experts, veterinarians, and biologists perform groundbreaking work at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park and Epcot SeaBase aquarium. Now for the first time, National Geographic will offer viewers an all-access pass into the 24/7 world of the incredible animal caretakers running one of the most advanced veterinary facilities in the world.
There is a lot more, but the one final thing I wanted to highlight is that on day one, all 30 seasons of The Simpsons will become available on the service as well, meaning you can enjoy all the adventures within Springfield as much as you want.
