A surprise new update for the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is out
An update to this story, as the Switch version has also seen the update release for it, even without official word from Rockstar.
The below screens were captured by Vooks.net, and show off just how much better all three games look on Switch. The left image is pre-patch and the right is the updated version.
Rockstar Games first released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition back in 2021 and people were not happy with much about the collection, from the characters to the world, textures, lighting and of course the rain. Now some immediate patches did attempt to correct many of the issues that were valid, they didn’t fix everything, but after a few updates, they were seemingly left alone.
Then in December 2023, the iOS and Android versions were released, but they were not done by the original developer, Grove Street Games, but instead were done here in Australia by Video Games Deluxe and it seems that was just the beginning for the studio.
A new update for the PC and most of the console games has been released, which applies a few fixes, but the major one is the lighting has been restored back to what it was. When the mobile ports were released in 2023, Eurogamer compared the versions, you can see how it looks below. The new lighting option means that we now get the original lighting style, so the worlds of the three games look as was originally intended.
The update, which is out for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S defaults to the new (or technically old) lighting style, but you can toggle it, if you wanted to. This is all we have on patch notes for the update:
Numerous fixes and improvements
Added Classic Lighting mode which restores the look and feel of the sky in the original games
You may also notice that Switch is not included in the platforms that got the update, there is no word on if they will or if those versions are done, but Switch normally gets updates a few weeks later than the others, so there is still time.
The final change that has happened with the release, Grove Street Games have had their name removed from the game, but there is no telling why.
